This is one of the most confusing and misunderstood topics all around the world. Detailers not just in India but all around the world offer multiple packages basis the number of base coat layers, durability/number of years, and price.
A starter package often provides 1 layer of ceramic coating, whereas some expensive packages can go up to 6,7 or even 10 coats.
Before going ahead with this article, we recommend you go through our other blogs How to apply Ceramic Coating?
So, let’s dive into the topic.
1. Can we apply multiple layers of ceramic coating?
Technically, Yes. We can apply layers of most ceramic coatings, but the procedure of layering will differ from product to product.
The key thing to note here is that the Manufacturer’s Instructions are King. So, before you start applying layers, the best idea is to go back to your manufacturer/supplier and ask if the particular ceramic coating can be layered or not.
With respect to Detailmax ceramic coatings, both 9H and 10H coatings are layer-able.
2. How many layers of Ceramic Coating are actually required?
As mentioned before, some expensive packages consist of multiple layers of ceramic coating. However, for many of these packages, it is only a gimmick. Yes, you can put too much ceramic coating. After a certain point, further layers stop bonding and it is only a waste of material and overcharge to customers.
Most brands, including Detailmax, recommend 2 layers of base coat and 1 layer of top coat for best-in-class protection along with shine, gloss and hydrophobicity. This adds 2-3 microns of ceramic coat over the vehicle’s clear coat.
3. How much time should you wait between layers?
While applying layers, you have to give a time gap between two layers. The time gap between layers depends on temperature, humidity, solvent used in ceramic coating, etc. The second layer of the base coat needs to be applied before the first layer has fully cured. But it should not be applied too soon as the first layer could be wet. Hence, it is very important to ask these questions to the manufacturer of the ceramic coating you are applying.
When it comes to Detailmax, you can apply a second layer of base coat between 3-4 hours of the first layer. And after 12 hours of the last base coat layer, a top coat layer can be applied.
In a nutshell, ceramic layering can be done, but not all products can be layered similarly. Every ceramic layering product needs to be applied differently for accurate results.
Follow the manufacturer’s/suppliers’ instructions before you start applying ceramic layering. As there are different types of coating and techniques. Most coatings are layer-able, but some are good enough only by one layer too.
