Windshield Polishing and Glass Nano Coating

Your car’s windshield absorbs the most amount of environmental debris. The car’s glass gets dirty due to the outer atmosphere which is due to pollution, dirt film, or carbon deposits. The debris gets stuck on your car’s glass and is not easily removable, not even with your day-to-day car wash sessions.

Over some time, the deposits increase and lead to a reduction in visibility. Improper wash methods also lead to a lot of scratches and swirls on the car’s windshield which again impacts visibility performance. This is very apparent during monsoons. As a result, many car owners tend to choose windshield polishing and nanocoating before or during the rains.

Let’s get into the entire process of Windshield Cleaning, Polishing, and Coating.

Step 1: Cleaning The Windshield

step-1-cleaning-the-windshield

The very first step is to clean the glass using a suitable glass cleaner. Properly wash and dry the windshield to remove loose dirt and debris.

Tip: Glass polishing should be done BEFORE the car wash. As in certain processes like glass polishing or headlight restoration, there are a lot of residues that make the car dirty.

Step 2: Claying

The second step is Claying the windshield. Claying helps in removing stuck particles and makes the surface smoother. The clay used is non-harmful for the car glasses. You can use a clay bar or clay towel; it doesn’t matter.

Step 3: Windshield Polishing

step-3-windshield-polishing

Now comes the main step. If the car is old and has a lot of scratches or swirls, you need to polish the windshield and remove these scratches.

In glass polishing, a special compound made of Cerium Oxide is used. The compound comes in powder form. You need to make a paste of it by adding water. This special compound is used to effectively remove scratches over a car’s windshield along with special Rayon Glass Pads.

Along with the compound, you need a polishing machine. In conditions where the car is old or the glasses are too spoiled, we suggest rotary polishing because it can deliver quick results for aggressive marks on the glass. But, if you don’t have experience using a rotary polisher, we suggest you use a Random Orbital polisher as they are much safer and easier to handle (with windshield, let’s not take risks!)

To better understand glass polishing, we will divide the step into further steps.

Step 1: Masking

Before you begin with the polishing, you must mask the glass using masking tape. As the powder that will be used for the polishing might get into the glass rubber beadings & become difficult to remove later on.

Step 2: Prepare the material

The material is the raw and powdered form. So, to prepare the material, you have to mix it with water, keeping the consistency of powder and water. Once you mix, the powder material will turn into paste form.

Step 3: Apply the paste to the glass

Once you prepare the paste, apply the paste to the glass. For a smooth and effective application, remove or lift the wipers.

Step 4: Polish the Windshield

Start polishing. Slowly polish in a criss-cross manner. One round of polishing can take between 20-25 mins.

Step 5: Windshield Nano coating or Ceramic Coating for Glass

step-4-applying-windshield-nano-coating

There are two major benefits of coating:

– Applying to the coat will ensure that the pollution or other particles do not stick to the glass quickly and easily. Which again means it will be easy to clean.

– Water Beading: The glass becomes hydrophobic and this will improve visibility on rainy days.

Note: There are special coatings for car windshields. Regular paint ceramic coatings SHOULD NOT be used on the windshield. Detailmax G-Max is a special nano-coating designed to work on a car’s windshield and provides extreme hydrophobicity, meaning water just sides off without the use of wipers.

Again, the nano-coating process is divided into smaller processes:

Step 1: Pre-Wipe

Like in Ceramic Coating application for paint, the first step is to clean all polishing oils and residue using Detailmax Pre-Wipe Precoat Cleaner. This pre-wipe is nano-based and contains degreaser and IPA meaning it will effectively clean the entire residue so that the coating can bond effectively.

Step 2: Applying Windshield Coating

The last step is to apply the Windshield Coating. When it comes to Detailmax GMax, we recommend that a thin layer should be applied for the best results. Apply the coating in a circular or up-down method and buff off after 3-5 minutes.

Tip: Do not forget to apply nano-coating on the wipers. It improves their sliding ability.

Key takeaways:

Do not forget to apply nano-coating on the wipers, if you have not removed the wiper during the polishing process. Or you have applied the polish on the wipers.

Use microfiber and start wiping the glass- in the direction, you applied the material.

Glass polishing is a four-step process.
